Earlier this month, InterCall challenged its employees to get involved in Earth Day activities. A short list of volunteer activities and festivals was sent out to all employees and the response has been overwhelming! Employees from Mexico City
to Chicago to Sydney have all agreed to participate in activities that will educate and empower individuals for Earth Day.

I attended the Oak Cliff Earth Day festival where there were many vendors for "green" products and services. I learned that the best way to get rid of ants in my yard (I live in Texas, so there are plenty of them) is to use something called beneficial nematodes. These little guys can get rid of ants, june bugs and grub worms. And, they're natural, not like harsh chemical bug sprays.
I also collected all of our paper from recycling bins for our first donation to a local school - it was about 35 pounds worth!

Today in the InterCall Chicago Corporate office there are a great deal of initiatives going on. We've closed off all of the cabinets in our kitchens, and have asked everyone to bring in their own kitchen ware - therefore reducing the amount of paper products used. All of our lights are turned off for the day and our employees took public transportation/carpooled. We are also encouraging recycling anything possible, turning computers to sleep mode when not in use and using the stairs instead of the elevators.

The event I attended here in Chicago was at the Lincoln Park Zoo. They had booths ranging from organic clothing to a car pooling service all there to educate the public! The best thing about it was that it was in the zoo so as you walked along you were sandwiched between animal exibits and those trying to preserve the enviroments they live in. Very interesting.

I had a great time at the Oak Cliff Earth Day event. I learned about the best way to dispose of used cooking grease and that catnip repels mosquitos! InterCall also donated a couple of boxes full of used inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges and cell phones to the Chiapas Project. This NGO then sells the donations to a recycler. All the monies from this endeavor go to fund small business loans, to women in Latin America. Just a tiny $50.00 loan is sufficient to get a micro business started! Truly a life changing seed. As they say I my village - "Tu tierra es mi tierra" - "My earth is your earth".

To commemorate Earth Day, my duaghter's pre-school has been learning all about the new three R's - reduce, reuse, recycle (as oppsosed to the original reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic). I went to her class yesterday to watch the whole school parade around in hats they made of recycled materials. I knew it was all sinking in when she told me that she was only going to use one paper towel to dry her hands so that she could save a tree.
It is great to instill the importance of taking care of the place we live at such a young age. When I was growing up, we did newspaper drives and collected cans, but nothing like today. I got invovled in my first Earth Day celebration in the early 90's when I was in high school and I am happy to see the momentum has picked up over the years. Hopefully, in another 10 years, recycling and being evnirnonmentally conscious will be a way of life instead of something that has be be marked with a holiday.

The West Point call center planted a Willow Oak on the call center front lawn to celebrate Earth Day. We plan to continue the tradition of planting a tree each year at this time. It was great to see everyone get excited and do something to help out the environment. Current and future employees of the West Point call center will benefit from our activity for years to come.

I attended an Arizona Diamondbacks game and they were celebrating earth day. Once you walked in they handed out earth day recycled bags to carry around any t-shirts, hats or jerseys you buy instead of giving the plastic bags. It was a good idea to aware the people at the game of earth day.

I was wearing my Earth Day t-Shirt at home when my 5 yr old son read the message on the front and asked what Earth Day was and why it was important. it felt great to know that I was teaching him a very important lesson at a very impressionable age. Although we will continue to support the earth in our home, hopefully the lessons he learns now will continue to positively influence him he is as he grows up...we even made him a homemade Earth Day shirt with earth and kid friendly finger paints!

My family and I attended the Earth Day celebration at The Children's Imagine It Museum of Atlanta. They had a puppet show with different animals discussing Earth Day and Global Warming, giving tips to the kids on small things they can do to make a difference. Each child was given a flower pot and planted seeds to take home. Each person was also given a packet to take home with helpful hints and cool pencils made from recycled currency and denim. It was an awesome event to teach the future leaders of our country (and parents too) on how to take care of our earth.

While I don't work in an actual office environment, and I wasn't able to participate in InterCall's "earth day events" - helping the environment is something that my family is practicing on a regular basis. Working from home allows me to reduce my carbon footprint since I'm not commuting in the car.
In addition to the things that we do at home, this month, my daughters school learned about the 3 R's and what it means for us to recycle. They also hold an ink cartridge recycling location. Each of the kids in the class were provided a packet from school to take home and they were visited by someone from the Recyling center...talking about what they do and how it's good for our earth. I love that while it's important for us, our kids are learning about it too...it can only make things better!
